Understanding the Bristol stool chart

What types 1–7 mean and why tracking them helps.

2 min read

The Bristol Stool Form Scale is a medical tool that sorts stool into seven types. It's a simple, private way to track how your gut is doing.

  • Types 1–2: hard and lumpy, a sign of constipation
  • Types 3–4: the ideal range — soft, formed and easy to pass
  • Types 5–7: loose to liquid, a sign of faster transit or diarrhea

Why log it?

Your bowel pattern is part of your gut score, and doctors use the Bristol scale to understand IBS subtypes (IBS-C, IBS-D, IBS-M). A few weeks of logs in your Gutprint report give your doctor far more to work with than "it varies".

Your logs are private and you can delete them at any time.
